Character Design Process

The following page outlines the most basic creative process used in designing a character from concept to final. It is important to note that every project is unique in its requirements. The criteria of each will be specifically addressed on a case by case basis.

Project start-up: Concept Development

Once a project is underway, the first step will be to complete a "concept development form." Submitted via email, this creative briefing of sorts will be instrumental in gathering all of the info needed to get your project rolling. The better understood a projects' concept and application, the smoother the creation process will be. It is also encouraged at this stage to provide any reference images, artistic samples, and other helpful material you'd like to get into our artists hands. After returning the concept form, the best-suited artist(s) will begin working closely with you on your project.

Stage 1: Character Design

Based upon the creative information and reference images provided, your project artist will now create several design concepts. The goal in this stage is to explore a variety of visual approaches and designs. Once the perfect character design has been established, it's onto stage two!

Stage 2: Character Pose

Since an expressive and personality-driven posture is ideal for any illustration, the goal in this phase is to explore a variety of poses for your character design. Beyond this stage, structural changes become time-consuming and resource intensive, so this is the ideal time to iron out all of the kinks from the final linework. Once a pose has been decided upon, the design will move onto "final."

Stage 3: Character Coloration

This is the moment you've been waiting for; the end result of having worked closely with skilled character artists who have contributed great amounts of time (and eraser shavings) in bringing your character to life! In this phase, design tweaks and color alterations may be desired to add that extra bit of polish to the final illustration. Upon proof approval, a download link to your final project files will be sent via email. This Koomdee Kit will include all of the file formats you'll need for printing, advertising, displaying, and presenting your character illustration. Whether used as an asset in visual development or intended for direct marketing, you can be sure your project is streamlined for any process!
